- Dress
appropriately, even if you are just going to pick up an
application and complete it at home. This means wearing clothing
that you would be expected to wear on the job (for example, a
skirt and a blouse for office work). First impressions are
crucial, and it’s important that you look responsible and well
kept. Sometimes when you ask for the application the company
will ask if you want an interview at that time.
- Always
say please and thank you when asking for an application. Office
staff are more likely to be helpful if you have shown them
respect.
- When
filling out an application, be certain you spell all words
correctly. Check in a dictionary, if needed, before writing on
the form.
- Type
your information on the form if possible. If you are filling out
a form on site, write neatly and use black ink.
- Don’t
cross out information. For questions that require you to write
out your answers in sentence form, write a rough draft on a
separate piece of paper and then copy it onto the application
when you are happy with how it’s written.
- Be
honest. You can get fired later if the company finds out that
you lied on your application.
- Sell
yourself. Keep track of your duties at previous jobs and be sure
to list those when you are describing what your skills are.
- Find
out what skills the job requires. If the job involves computer
work or answering phones, for instance, be certain to list any
experience you’ve had in those areas on your application when
discussing previous employment.
- In
general, keep track of names, phone numbers, and addresses of
all previous employers. Each time you fill out an application
you will be asked to list your employment for several years (as
many as six or more). Keep the information on a list that you
can bring with you to the job site.
